Luffy was born in the small Fuschia Village, in the West Blue. There, to the 10 years, the Shanx pirate knew, who, even so it did not know, was one of the biggest pirates of the world. Despite the immense efforts on the part of Ruffy trying to enter for the flock, Shanx never allowed that this happened, why it (Ruffy) was very new; to prove its capacity, Ruffy then threads a knife in the cheek, earning the scar that acompnaha until today. Shanx admits that it is an impressive fact, but does not leave Ruffy to enter. Certain day, in the bar where the pirates were, Ruffy finds a type of strange fruit and it eats it, without knowing that he is one of the lendários Akuma in the Mi (Fruit of the Devil), finishing for gaining the power "Gomu Gomu", that becomes its rubber body. In this time where the flock of the "red pirates" (the flock of Shanx) is in the city, an outlaw arrives and when he does not find beer to vender, he humiliates Shanx, playing beer in its same face and ordering it to clean the soil. Ruffy is not satisfied with this and decides to take off satisfactions with the outlaw, exactly not having enough force pra this. When to discover that Ruffy is carrying of the Akuma in the Mi (and after being humiliated by Shanx), outlaw leads boy for high sea, threatening to play it there in case that somebody it disobeyed (the ones that had eaten the Akuma in the Mi lose ability to swim), but Shanx obtains to save Ruffy of outlaw, that it is eaten by a monster that the leader of the Red Hair obtains to drive away, but finishes losing its arm during the rescue.


After this everything, Shanx decides to go even so of the village, and leaves for Ruffy its straw hat, that would represent for the boy the spirit pirate. Seven years later, Ruffy decides to form its proper flock, and all follows route to the seas of the world, looking for, is clearly, the One Piece.
